The basics

Good habits from day one.

The single biggest factor in how long your Loxys extensions last is how you care for them. Our cuticle-intact, no-shed weft and premium nano tips are built to perform, but like any investment, it rewards attention.

The good news: extension care isn't complicated once you understand a few key rules. Get into the right habits in the first few weeks and it becomes second nature. This guide covers everything — daily brushing, washing, drying, sleeping, and styling — so you can get the most out of every month out of your Loxys hair.

Step by step

Your complete care routine.

Brushing — the foundation.

Brush morning and night, every single day. Use an extension-safe brush or wide-tooth comb. Always start at the ends and work upward in sections — never drag a brush from root to tip in one stroke.

Hold the hair at mid-shaft with your free hand to take tension off the weft and bonds while you brush the lengths below. Before washing, always brush out any tangles first.

Pro tipBrush before bed even if you're braiding. Getting knots out before they tighten overnight takes 60 seconds and saves you much longer in the morning.

Washing — less is more.

Wash 1–2 times per week maximum. Over-washing strips moisture and shortens the lifespan of your extensions. Use a protein and sulfate-free shampoo only — they are too harsh for extension hair.

Work shampoo in a downward motion from roots to ends — never scrub in circular motions or pile the hair on top of your head. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

Pro tipDilute your shampoo slightly before applying. It spreads more evenly and reduces the risk of product buildup near your weft.

Conditioning — mid-length only.

Apply conditioner from mid-length to ends only — never at the roots or directly on the weft or bonds. Conditioner near attachment points can cause slippage.

Use a wide-tooth comb to distribute evenly. Leave for 2–3 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. A weekly deep conditioning treatment keeps the hair soft and manageable.

Pro tipA small amount of leave-in conditioner applied to dry ends between washes keeps the hair hydrated without weighing it down.

Drying — never skip this.

After washing, gently pat dry with a microfibre towel — never rub. Rubbing creates friction that causes tangling and frizz.

Blow dry the roots and weft area thoroughly. Wet attachments can cause matting and damage. For the lengths, either air dry or blow dry with a quality heat protectant.

Non-negotiableNever go to bed with wet extensions. Even slightly damp wefts can mat overnight and cause permanent damage.

Heat styling — protect first.

Always apply heat protectant before using any heat tool. Extension hair does not have the same natural oils as your own hair and is more vulnerable to heat damage.

Keep heat tools below 180°C. Avoid repeatedly passing over the same section and avoid applying heat directly to the weft or bond area.

Pro tipHeat damage to extensions is permanent. A good heat protectant is one of the best investments you can make.

Sleeping — protect overnight.

Before bed, loosely braid or tie your hair in a low ponytail. This prevents tangling and friction while you move during sleep.

Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase where possible. The reduced friction compared to cotton makes a huge difference to the condition of your extensions over time.

Pro tipA loose plait takes 30 seconds and will save you detangling time in the morning — particularly for longer extensions.

Common questions

Questions we hear a lot.

If you have a question that isn't covered here, reach out at hello@hairbyloxys.com — we're always happy to help.

Wash 1–2 times per week maximum. Over-washing removes the natural moisture from the hair and significantly shortens the lifespan of your extensions. If your scalp tends to get oily quickly, use a dry shampoo at the roots between washes rather than washing more frequently.
Yes — our cuticle-intact hair takes colour very well. Many clients have their extensions custom-coloured to match their natural hair perfectly. We strongly recommend having this done by a professional stylist experienced with extension hair. Always do a strand test first, and avoid over-processing. Extensions should never be bleached or lightened.
The most common causes are not brushing frequently enough, going to bed with wet or unbrushed hair, or using products that contain protein, alcohol or silicones. Start by brushing morning and night consistently, ensuring hair is completely dry before sleeping, and switching to protein, sulfate and alcohol-free products. If tangling persists, contact your stylist — it may be time for a maintenance appointment.
Chlorine and salt water are both harsh on extension hair and can cause dryness, tangling and colour fading. If you do swim, braid your hair before getting in the water, rinse immediately afterwards with fresh water, and apply a leave-in conditioner. Alternatively, apply a specialised pre-swim treatment before getting in the water. We recommend minimising swimming where possible to protect your investment.
As your natural hair grows, your weft or nano tip attachments will move away from the scalp. Book a maintenance appointment every 6–8 weeks for weft, or 8–10 weeks for nano tips. Leaving it longer puts strain on your natural hair and attachments and can cause matting near the roots. Your stylist will reposition the extensions and check the overall condition of the hair at each appointment.
Avoid any products containing protein, sulfates, alcohol, or silicones near the roots or attachment points. Protein makes the hair brittle, sulfates strip moisture, alcohol dries the hair out, and silicones can cause buildup that weakens bonds over time. Avoid heavy oil-based products near the weft or bonds as these can cause slippage. Stick to lightweight, extension-safe formulas.
